This early, TV5 is earning the benefits from its decision to help bring back to our shores the Philippines' lone symbol of genuine superstardom, pop media artist par excellence, Ms. Nora Aunor.
To say that such a move is a gamble on the part of the fast-rising network is to show lack of vision and understanding of the deep-rooted sentiments of the majority of the Filipino public.
Yes, there will be less of the screaming throngs who call themselves fans that will show up in her fans’ day.
And yes, realistically speaking, the drama series that she will headline for the network will definitely still have to struggle fiercely against the fantaseryes and tear-jerkers of tv giants, ABS-CBN and GMA 7.
BUT, and this is the big but- in the three networks’ long-term battle for the HEARTS and MINDS, and the eventual LOYALTY of the Filipino public, this writer sees that TV5’s decision to be THE active player in ‘resurrecting’ the career of Nora Aunor in the Philippines is a stroke of genius because it has given the Kapatid network a major point to its favor, one rare point that may never come again for any industry player.
We are not merely talking about the instant and almost daily multi-media publicity that Ms. Aunor’s return is generating for TV5. Not even the added ‘glitter’ that the name ‘Nora Aunor’ will lend to the fast-rising network nor the acting expertise that its roster of talents could surely learn and benefit from.
Those are mere windfalls of the real deal.
And what is the real deal that the think-tanks of GMA 7 and ABS-CBN 2 may have overlooked?

By taking the ‘bold’ step to generously open its doors and embrace the embattled superstar, she whose name is still largely recognized by most Filipinos, whose life story still reverberates to so many people, in fact her situation now reverberating even more louder than ever before given that this genius of an artist is generally reported to be living a more humble and struggle-filled OFW life overseas, a scenario and sensitivity that is all too familiar to many Filipino families TODAY, TV5, the ‘happy network’ has gained for itself a more lofty, more endearing image.
For when the Superstar returns after eight long years of being away from the Philippines, she comes home to TV5 which will now be seen as the one network that salutes her struggles as an overseas Filipino and substantiates this salute by giving her talent and genius another chance to shine- in her own country, for her own people. And as TV 5 offers Nora a fitting feast and a warm abode on her return, the act could only be symbolic for what the network intends to offer to all Filipinos, whether they be coming home or not.
