"Nagulat ako kay Mart Escudero. Ang husay na niya!"- Network Executive
His name is not among the first that would easily come to mind when we speak of the most valuable rising stars today. Not yet.
But MART ESCUDERO's recent career moves seem to prove that behind his rather laid back onscreen persona is one determined young talent who is willing to take calculated risks if that be the road to stardom.
His first big risk was moving from GMA 7, where he was among the winners in the giant network's nth edition of its reality-star discovery show 'Starstruck', to the aggressive Kapatid Network TV5. That move resulted to a leading man role for Mart, in a primetime heavy drama series (Babaeng Hampaslupa) which required him to deliver quite much more than what his previous shows asked from him. And being exposed to established thespians like Susan Roces, Eddie Garcia, Alice Dixon, Susan Africa and Jay Manalo could only be good for any aspiring talent.
And while the soap series had just recently aired its finale now comes another surprising move-arguably a bigger risk from Mart via the upcoming independent film "Zombadings." For urban Pinoys, the title immediately gives a clue as to what the movie is about- 'zombies' and 'homosexuals.' Is it a comedy, a gay movie or a horror flick? Or could it be a combo of any or all of the mentioned genre? That is another story for another article.
But back to Mart Escudero, the supposedly 'young-leading-man-in-the-making' new star, the question that immediately comes to mind is: "What is he doing as a lead in that movie?"
If this is a calculated career-move, has he calculated the right data? Is this a risk worth-taking?
We haven't personally seen the film and this is not a film appreciation blog site. This is a 'star value' development and support site. Our main goal is to look at the career of a star- its past, current and more importantly future state.
And if the reaction of one high ranking industry player is any indication, Mart Escudero's risk in 'Zombadings' will further improve his star value overnight.
"Ang galing-galing ni Mart! Hindi ko in-expect considering his lack of exposure in the past! Hindi drama ang pelikula pero ang hirap ng role pero nagawa n'ya.", exclaimed the industry expected after seeing the film rsvp.
If so, then Mart can not only claim to be part of a progressive film, produced by progressive filmmakers. More importantly, Mart Escudero, the still relatively new star, may be set to prove that he does not only have the looks but the talent needed to be taken seriously as a 'star of value.'
From 'reality star' to 'soap drama male lead' to the film industry's surprisingly newest versatile actor! IF this tag proves to truly fit Mart after the release of 'Zombadings', then indeed, Mart Escudero is on his way if not zooming past his comtemporaries and enter that envious league of "stars of value" as its newest rising star.
'Ito lang ang masasabi ko. Ang layu-layo ng acting niya kay Aljur.'
