Question1: What do you think of the trend in soap operas now?

Superstarvalue Answer1: ...It is no longer merely an exclusively female-oriented form of entertainment. It has expanded its audience. The males: husbands, boyfriends, kuyas, titos, etc., are watching it. The absence of a strong alternative male-oriented entertainment fare (think PBA of yesteryears)...explains the success of the action-oriented “soaps” of...

...however, the ever-reliable female audience are not about to totally surrender the “remote control” to their husbands/kids. Women still want to “cry”, to “fall in love”, to hear their emotions “revealed” through a television show-often in soaps, specifically the drama genre where...

...the challenge now is how to attract the interest of an “expanded audience.” The tv fare that could offer the best of each “element” – those that work for the male, the kids, and the female sensibilities- will come out the winner. Finally, whether male, female or kids, the audience will remain to be “Filipino.” Thus, to articulate best the Filipino heart, mind and spirit is, to my mind, the most effective and lasting approach in gaining their patronage..."

Question2: Which soap operas do you like? Why?

Superstarvalue Answer2:

1) BETTY LA FEA - ... Intelligent. Sensible. Reinvents the ‘beauty and the beast’ concept. May ‘puso’ but more convincingly, may ‘sense” din. Ito ang unang female lead character sa soap na napanood ko na nag-capitalize sa profession at intelligence ng babae, malayo sa domesticated, damsel in distress types in 99% of soaps. For this “improvement”, the audience all over the world, including the Filipinos, have rewarded the makers of nothing less than excellent ratings anywhere its shown, proving the universality of its sensibilities.

2) GULONG NG PALAD ( original version) - very Filipino, very honest, no frills, intimately executed- parang pinanonood mo lang ang buhay ng kapit-bahay mo. Ensemble acting is heart-felt, led by Ms. Caridad Sanchez and the young Romnick Sarmenta.

3) PANGAKO SA ‘YO - first teleserye that actually looked like a movie-‘sumisipa’ ang execution ng all too familiar story. Very “energetic” piece of ensemble performance. In showbiz lingo, ‘baklang-bakla’ ang ‘Amor Powers-Madam Claudia’ conflict which appeared refreshing due to the sophistication and the “gloss” of its writing and execution.

4) JEWEL IN THE PALACE – another ground-breaking soap. Refreshing ang angle ng story, with the focus less on the romance and more on the personal triumph of the woman from slave to near royalty. Also the challenge to authority is very eminent kaya marami sa BCD viewers ang naka-relate, in my opinion. Puwede pala ang soap na Prinsipyo at hindi Lalaki/Babae ang pinag-aawayan.

5) SPRING DAYS - sobrang masakit sa puso ang plot pero sensible and sensitive, keeps you guessing for the ending till the last frame.

6) STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN - never failed to make me cry.

7) MARINA - from reliable sources, ‘Marina’ blew the minds of many industry insiders for daring to put two genre in one, heralding the birth of the ‘fantaseryes.’

8) MULAWIN - ...Mulawin took the cue from Marina and upped the ante through more ambitious visuals, and with the female audience secured by the casting of Richard and Angel, virtually “expanded its wings” and attracted even the male and the kiddie crowds by taking the adventure-drama route and exploiting Angel Locsin’s attractive physique. But still, the missing element of “heart” in the writing and execution was palpable especially mid-way of the soap where the visuals can no longer sustain “excitement”, thus dampening its potential for greatness. In the end, it was good while it lasted.

9) MARIMAR – Thalia version (maganda/sexy si Thalia contrast sa innocent /naïve role-instantly an attraction. Then, she also looks radiant as a classy woman in the latter part of the soap. But again, like Jewel, ang emotional hook ay nasa kung paano iri-redeem ni Marimar ang sarili whether she gets the guy or not. Mabilis ang pacing ng plot, yes, but while it works on some aspect, I feel nag-suffer ‘yung ‘puso’ ng material. You just want her to get even. ‘Yung ‘falling in love’ stage, naging secondary.)

10) MULA SA PUSO (genuinely romantic- Selina redefined “evil” to a higher level)"
