PETA and REP Team Up for "CareDivas"

MANILA, Philippines - Manila's pioneer theater groups, the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) and Repertory Philippines are producing the much awaited-awaited encore performances of the hit musical comedy "Caredivas" this coming April 27-29 at Greenbelt, Onstage.

Care-givers by day...

"Caredivas" is a disarmingly funny and candid musical drama about five transgender Overseas Filipino Workers in Israel who work as care givers in the morning and transform into glamorous drag queen performers come night fall. While desperate to make ends meet in another country, they also struggle to search for freedom and acceptance in a foreign land.

Transgender-performers by night...

The play's theatrical and wickedly funny text, written by award-winning playwright, Liza Magtoto cradles lovely, gentle moments that mull over the lives of the main characters: the kind and loving Chelsea, the often-sarcastic group leader Shai, the ditsy Thalia, the bubbly Kayla and the ill-tempered Jonee.

In a land far from home...

Vincent de Jesus' musical score leaves audiences humming tunes as it weaves through the narrative. Music and lyrics serve as the other "text" that embodies the romantic-whimsy of this play.

Where they are welcome to provide care for others...

Directed by Maribel Legarda, the creative team behind the show also includes costume designer John Abul, lighting designer Jon Jon Villareal, visual artist and set designer Leo Abaya and contemporary dancer and choreographer Carlon Matobato.

So they may provide for the others they care for but must leave behind.

"Caredivas" includes a powerhouse cast of theater actors: PETA artists Melvin Lee, Vincent De Jesus, Phil Noble, Buddy Caramat, Dudz Teraña, Jason Barcial and Eric dela Cruz. Featured guest artists are: Paul Holme, Ricci Chan, Jerald Napoles, Myke Salomon, Angeli Bayani together with Miguel Hidalgo and Dominic Miclat-Janssen.

But who cares for the care-giver in drag?

Veteran actress and Repertory Philippines' Children's Theater Artistic Director, Joy Virata joins cast as Adara and Sara, roles formerly played by PETA President, Cecilia Garrucho.

INSPIRADO at masaya ngayon si ate Guy. Ito ang una naming napansin nang humarap siya sa kanyang mga tagahang at ilang movie press sa paglulunsad ng "Noranians Worldwide" (NOW), ang bagong "umbrella organization" ng iba't-ibang fans club na binuo mismo ng superstar. Pero hindi isang malaking pelikula o anomang showbiz project ang ibinabalita ni ate Guy sa larawang ito kundi isang personal na mensahe mula sa puso ng superstar para sa kanyang mga tapat na tagahanga na hindi bumitiw sa pagsuporta at pagmamahal sa kanya sa loob ng napakaraming taon, sa gitna ng lahat ng kabiguan at tagumpay: "Ngayon po ay ako naman...susubukan ko pong tumbasan ang mga sakripisyo at pagmamahal ninyo sa akin...

 

SERYO si ate Guy. Sa ilalim ng NOW, layunin ng superstar na makapagbigay ng educational scholarships mula elementary hanggang high school at livelihood seminars/training programs para sa mga nangangailangan. At para gumulong na ang mga proyektong ito, nagbigay si ate Guy ng one hundred thousand pesos (Php 100,000) upang magsilbing "seed money" ng grupo (NOW) na siyang mangunguna sa pagsasakatuparan ng mga proyektong nabanggit.

Minsan ay may pagkutya silang tinawag na "bakya" crowd pero pinatunayan at patuloy na pinatutunayan ng mga tagahanga at supporters ni ate Guy na iba-iba man ang estado nila sa buhay, mula sa mga mahihirap hanggang sa mga propesyunal at mga intelektwal, pinagbubuklod sila ng iisang panlasa- ang panlasa sa di-mapantayang husay at di lubos na maipaliwanag na karisma ni Ms. Nora Aunor.

At ngayon, pagkatapos ng humigit-kumulang 45 taon, sila (ang mga fans) at si ate Guy pa rin ang magkakasama para naman sa mas mataas na adhikain, ang makatulong sa mga nangangailangan- bilang isang pribadong grupo- sa labas ng showbiz at sa labas ng pulitika.

"Ang importante ay 'yung nasa puso." Ito ang mga huling salita na iniwan ni Ms Nora Aunor sa kanyang mga tagapakinig ng araw na iyon. Masasabing personal na nga ang usapan ni ate Guy at ng kanyang mga tagahanga. Nagbalik na siya. Nagpapagaling pa siya pero bilang isang artista, muli ay yayakapin na niya ang kanyang estado bilang isang simbolo ng mataas ngunit makamasang sining. At bilang isang tao, susubukan niyang suklian ang pagmamahal na ibinigay sa kanya ng napakaraming Pilipino sa loob ng napakaraming taon.

Kung ganito na ang disposisyon ng Superstar ng bayan, maaari ngang pagkatapos ng halos walong taon ng pagsubok at paglalayag, nakita na ni Bb. Nora Cabaltera Villamayor kung saan siya tunay na kailangan, kung sinu-sino ang mga tunay niyang kaibigan, at kung saan ang tunay niyang tahanan.
